My Entrepreneurial Journey: Building Thrive Marketing
Introduction
We recently caught up with Jennifer Brennan, CEO and Founder of Thrive Marketing, to learn more about her entrepreneurial journey so far, and how she went about building Thrive Marketing.
“My entrepreneurial journey didn’t begin with a single defining moment. It grew from a lifelong belief (since I was a little girl) that I would one day work for myself, a belief shaped by family influences, lived experience and an early understanding of what hard work can make possible.”
Early Roots: Family, Values and DCU
Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
“Entrepreneurship was woven into my childhood. My parents ran their own accounting practice, and my grandmother was a remarkable businesswoman who had several ventures over the years. In particular my grandmother was widowed from an early age and was raising 6 children by herself, her strength, drive and resilience have always inspired me, and in particular when it comes to my life and Thrive. I suppose you could also say I grew up in an environment where there was a deep belief that creating something of your own is both possible and worthwhile.
After graduating from DCU with a Bachelor of Business Studies, my career took me through consultancy, professional services, a DCU‑based startup in the Invent Centre, and later the charity sector. These roles exposed me to a variety of organisational cultures, some supportive and empowering, others less so, and they shaped and influenced my leadership and business style.
DCU has remained a strong anchor in my life, from my Intra placement right through to becoming a member of the DCU Alumni Council, continuing to support students and the alumni community.”
A Pivotal Turning Point: Taking Chances
What was the pivotal moment that made you decide to start this business?
“Thrive Marketing was born during a period of profound personal transition. At the time of setting up Thrive Marketing I had just left a toxic relationship, had a young son (Áron who was just turning 2) and was a newly single parent, rebuilding my life. I needed flexibility, stability and purpose. I realised very clearly that a traditional working structure would not provide the life I wanted to build for myself and my son. That realisation was the catalyst for founding Thrive Marketing.
Seven years later, Thrive grew into what I had envisioned: a people‑first consultancy shaped by values, flexibility and meaningful impact.”
Lessons That Shaped My Approach
Were there any key experiences or lessons from your past that influenced your approach to entrepreneurship?
“Throughout my career, I saw examples of marketing done exceptionally well, and examples where it was handled poorly. I also experienced agency partnerships from the client side and knew how frustrating it could be when communication was unclear or expectations weren’t met.
I wanted to build something different. Something better. Something grounded in integrity, impact, and topped off with some fun!
Our ethos centres around “people‑first marketing,” and our approach has always centred on:
· clarity over jargon,
· collaboration over ego,
· integrity above shortcuts,
· and honest, human communication.
These principles have shaped Thrive’s culture and our client relationships from the very beginning.”
Creating Thrive Marketing: Solving a Real Gap
How did you come up with the idea for your startup? Was there a specific problem you wanted to solve?
“The idea for Thrive Marketing emerged from a clear gap I witnessed across sectors: organisations struggling to communicate confidently and strategically. Despite the rapid evolution of digital tools and platforms, the fundamentals of good marketing have not changed.
Tools will continue to evolve, but understanding your audience, having a clear strategy about what you want to achieve and communicating authentically remain the foundation of effective marketing.
Thrive was built to deliver that foundation consistently and excellently, and to drive true impact.”
Overcoming Early Challenges
What was the biggest challenge you faced when starting, and how did you overcome it?
“The greatest early challenge was learning to overcome my own self‑doubt. Entrepreneurship requires you to back yourself before anyone else does. That belief takes practice.”
How did you finance the startup initially, and what was the process of securing funding like?
“Financing the business was also a challenge. Thrive began as a fully self‑funded venture, and while Ireland offers strong mentorship and training supports, early‑stage funding for service‑based businesses can be limited and structured in ways that don’t always support new founders.
As we’re now going through a period of rapid growth we are faced with similar challenges, and are working hard to identify and secure funding that will support the business through this exciting period.”
What Makes Thrive Different
Can you describe what your business does and what makes it unique in the market?
“Thrive is a full‑service marketing consultancy working with professional services, the charity sector and impact-focused organisations. We also focus on a number of key areas including branding and creative, event management, digital marketing and strategy development.”
How does your product or service stand out from your competitors?
“We are different in that what we stand for is lived in our day to day activity, all built on that ethos of “people‑first marketing”. We are also truly committed to providing genuine flexible working and values‑driven decision‑making.
We also believe that what truly sets us apart is the fact that we are:
· We are approachable, calm and solutions‑focused.
· We prioritise honesty, transparency and integrity.
· We ensure clarity and consistency in everything we deliver.
· We fix issues quickly and openly, without panic or blame.
· We pair our core team of experts with specialist associates for tailored expertise.
Marketing does not need to be chaotic or overly complicated. Our job is to make it clear, strategic and effective.”
Our Mission: Flexibility, Integrity and Impact
What is the mission or vision behind your company? How do you see it evolving over time?
“Thrive was founded on the belief that people deserve fulfilling careers that work with their lives. True flexibility is incredibly rare in the traditional workplace, particularly for women juggling multiple roles. I wanted to model a business built around trust, flexibility and respect.
Our mission is to deliver exceptional marketing that helps organisations grow, while creating meaningful, flexible careers for our team.
Our values‑driven culture is at the heart of what we do and of our success.”
The Most Rewarding Part
What has been the most rewarding part of building your business so far?
“There have been many rewarding milestones, our growth, our clients, our team, and our reputation. But the biggest reward has been the life this business has helped me create for my son and myself. He is my guiding star and the reason I continue to build Thrive with purpose and passion.”
Building the Team: Attitude First
How did you go about assembling your team, and what qualities were you looking for in your first hires?
“I had the pleasure of speaking about this at a DCU alumni panel where I shared that the right attitude comes first, skills can always be learned.
When hiring, we look first for someone’s attitude and outlook. Does the person have passion, ambition, drive and are they in the mind-set of getting stuff done. We also look for professionals who embody kindness, curiosity, accountability, emotional intelligence, and alignment with our values. Oh and who are fun too!
We want people who care deeply about doing meaningful, thoughtful work, and who enjoy the process of doing it together.”
Obstacles and Lessons
What has been the biggest obstacle you’ve encountered as an entrepreneur, and how did you handle it?
“Two challenges stand out the most: balancing single parenthood with entrepreneurship, and finding the right people for the team.”
What mistakes have you made along the way, and what lessons have you learned from them?
“Oh I’ve made many mistakes along the way, probably a few too many to share here! I also learned the importance of boundaries, saying no, refining systems and creating space to step away. Those lessons have strengthened the business and me as a leader.”
Staying Motivated
How do you stay motivated and manage the ups and downs of entrepreneurship?
“To stay motivated, I return to my “why”: the life I am building for my son, Áron, and for myself, the community we are cultivating, and the clients and teams we support.
In challenging times, and believe me there have been many, momentum is essential. For me, and us in the business, in the most challenging of times we keep moving, keep looking forward, remain positive and go back to getting the basics right.”
The Future of Marketing & Our Goals for The Future
How do you see your industry evolving in the next few years
“There is no doubt that marketing is evolving rapidly, driven by new technologies, AI, changing consumer behaviours, and the forever increasing change and uncertainty in the world around us. But, the basics and foundations of marketing will always remain, and the future of marketing remains deeply human. Authenticity, trust and clarity will always win.”
What are your short‑term and long‑term goals for your business?
“In terms of the future for Thrive Marketing, we plan to stay grounded in the fundamentals while remaining curious, agile and adaptable. In terms of short-term goals it’s all about managing this period of great change and rapid growth. It’s about strengthening our systems and processes, refining our service offering, increasing awareness of our work and our amazing team.
In terms of longer term goals we are focused on growing our team, diversifying our client base, and growing internationally.”
Advice for New Entrepreneurs
What advice would you give to someone just starting their entrepreneurial journey?
“First of all, well done! Setting up a business is no easy feat. If I could speak with myself as I embarked on this journey nearly eight years ago I would say…
· Enjoy the journey and celebrate the wins.
· Don’t be too hard on yourself – often we are our own harshest critic!
· Build strong systems and processes early.
· Ask for help.
· Create space – the space to think, reflect, strategise and breath. It’s often in this space that the true magic happens.
And remember…entrepreneurship is not reserved for a select few. Anyone with resilience, openness and determination can succeed.”
